How does the online lesson work?

You are required to use a software called “Skype” to have online lessons. It is free to download and with Skype you can make free calls over the internet to other people on Skype.
*Please prepare a headset (or microphone and speaker) by yourself. We recommend you to use a web camera if you have one.

What kind of online lessons do you have?

We can provide lessons on any contents you want to learn like basic grammars, exams, business conversation, and free talk. If you want, you can choose what you want to learn from JOT original resources, and also text books for beginners, business, or JLPT. Teachers can make a plan for your lessons regarding your goals and make your learning experience easier and more effective.

Do you have a free trial lesson?

Yes. If you click Join JOT , you will go to booking page for free trial lesson. Check the calendar and book a trial lesson from available lessons.

How can I start a lesson?

After you booked a lesson, the teacher will contact you before the lesson starts.

Do I need to prepare anything for the lesson?

As teachers can provide you the learning material, it's not necessary for you to prepare any. However, we also recommend you to choose your favorite resources to learn in the lesson. It can be videos, pictures, or textbooks etc, please check and search JOT resources. You need to buy a textbook before the lesson If you wan to learn using a textbook.

All lessons will be done in Japanese?

Basically our lessons will be in Japanese, but some of our teachers can speak other languages than Japanese. So please check our teachers' profiles if you’re not so confident.

Is it ok that I've never learned Japanese before?

Of course yes. No problem.
Each teacher, however, has different language skills except Japanese, so please check our teachers' profiles before you book. Also teachers offer customized lessons according to your level and skills, so don't worry.

Is it possible to join Japanese Online Talk without a web camera?

Yes. All the teachers use web cameras, but students are not required to have one.

About Booking and Payment

How do I make a booking?

At first, please register from “Join JOT” and purchase some points. Then you can make a booking from teachers' schedule pages, resources pages, or “MY JOT” page.

Is it possible to book a lesson and take it on the same day?

No. You need to make a booking at least 1 day before the lesson time.

How much does it cost for a lesson?

You will spend 75-190 points for one hour lesson.

How many points should I buy?

The number of points required for a lesson is different by each teacher, so you might want to think who you want to be your teacher and how many lessons you want to take before buying points. But if you want to ask how many lessons you can take with certain amount of points, pleasecontact us.

I see the “First Lesson Points” and “Regular Lesson Points”on the teachers profile. How do they work?

If you are booking a lesson with any teacher for the first time, you will only spend the points shown in “First lesson” and you will spend the “Points” for any lessons with the teacher after the first time.

How can I pay the lesson fee?

Bank transfer or PayPal is available. Please note that students are also in charge for the transfer fees as well.

How can I cancel a lesson?

You can cancel your lesson from the “cancel “ button on your lesson schedule page before the “cancel time” set by each teacher. And you can get your points back. Please note that you can’t cancel after the “cancel time” and you can’t get your points back. However, we appreciate if you still let us know about the cancellation before the lesson from the contact form.

Can I get the points refund if a lesson failed due to a connection problem?

It depends on the situation whether you can get a refund or not. Please tell us the detail if you had some problems.

Who are making those videos?

JOT staffs and JOT teachers are making those original videos.

How can I find some resources?

Resources are divided into some categories, and into some keywords. So please click the category or keyword that you are interested to find resources you want to learn.

Trouble Shooting

I can not hear a teacher's voice clearly.

Technical problems might occur due to Skype or Windows Messenger. Please check your sound configuration before your lesson. Please hang up and connect again if you cannot hear your teacher. Let us know if you still have any inconvenience.

I had a technical problem with my computer and missed a lesson, can I postpone it?

Basically a missed lesson won’t be postponed, however you have a possibility to cancel a lesson in advance.
